How the response works

From the first call to the finished repair.

Every emergency is different, but the way we handle it isn't. Whether it's a burst pipe at 2am, storm damage to a roof, or a wall that's no longer safe, we follow the same four-stage process — so you always know what's happening, what it costs, and what happens next.

How the response works

Four clear moves

01

Tell us what happened

This is the moment you make contact — by phone, ideally, since it's the fastest way for us to understand urgency. We'll ask a short set of questions: what's happened, when it started, whether anyone is at immediate risk, and what part of the property is affected. This isn't a script we read for the sake of it — it's how we work out whether this needs an immediate response or can be scheduled for later the same day.

What we're checking for:

  • Is there an ongoing risk to safety (exposed wiring, structural instability, gas smell)?
  • Is the damage actively getting worse (running water, a hole letting weather in)?
  • Is the property still secure, or is there a break-in/access risk?
  • What tools, materials, or specialist trade (roofer, electrician, general builder) is likely needed?

What you can expect from us:

  • A straight answer on realistic timing — we won't promise "30 minutes" if it isn't true.
  • Clear guidance on anything you should do yourself before we arrive (e.g. shutting off a stopcock or isolating a circuit, if it's safe for you to do so).
  • Confirmation of the call-out arrangement so there are no surprises later.
02

We assess on site

Once on site, a competent tradesperson carries out a proper visual inspection — not a rushed glance. Emergency damage is rarely limited to what's immediately visible: a roof leak can travel along joists before it shows on a ceiling; a burst pipe can soak a wall cavity long before staining appears. We check the surrounding area, not just the obvious point of damage.

What happens during the assessment:

  • We identify the root cause, not just the symptom (e.g. why a leak is happening, not just where the water is landing).
  • We check for secondary risks — dampness spreading, electrics near water, weakened structure.
  • We explain what we've found in plain, non-technical language, and answer your questions on the spot.
  • We confirm the scope of work and charges before any repair work begins, so you're deciding with full information.

Documentation, for your records or an insurance claim:

Where relevant, we can take photos and put together a short written summary of the damage and cause — the kind of record that's genuinely useful if you need to make a claim with your home insurer later. This is not a substitute for your insurer's own loss adjuster, but it gives you a same-day account while the details are fresh.

03

We make it safe

Before anything is permanently repaired, the priority is stopping the situation from getting worse. This is the "make safe" stage that's standard practice across the emergency building trade — the same principle used by insurers and local authority emergency repair teams: contain the immediate risk first, fix everything else once the property is stable.

Typical make-safe actions, depending on the emergency:

  • Isolating or capping a water supply to stop an active leak
  • Temporarily sealing or tarping a damaged roof section against weather
  • Boarding up broken windows, doors, or breached walls
  • Isolating damaged electrical circuits until they can be safely repaired
  • Removing or securing any loose, unstable material that poses a falling hazard
  • Setting up basic drying/ventilation where water ingress has occurred, to slow further damage while a full drying plan is arranged

Why this stage matters:

A property that's been made safe can wait a day or two for scheduling the full repair without the damage spreading further, further compromising the structure, or creating new hazards. This also matters for insurance — most policies expect reasonable steps to have been taken to prevent further loss.

04

We put it back

This is the full reinstatement — taking the property from "safe" back to "as it should be." Depending on the job, this can be same-day or may need to be scheduled once materials, access, or specialist trades are arranged. We'll always give you a realistic timeline rather than an optimistic one.

What this typically includes:

  • Drying and strip-out — removing any water-damaged materials that can't be dried in place (sodden plasterboard, insulation, flooring), and running proper drying equipment where needed
  • Permanent repair — the actual fix: re-roofing a section, replacing damaged brickwork or render, rewiring an affected circuit, replastering, refitting
  • Finishing — making good so the repaired area matches its surroundings, not just technically "fixed"
  • Final check — a walk-through with you before we consider the job complete, so you can raise anything you're not happy with while we're still on site

Staying in the loop:

For anything beyond a same-day fix, we'll keep you updated on progress rather than leaving you to chase us — especially where the job depends on materials arriving or coordinating more than one trade.

— Throughout the process

Straight answers, before you commit to anything.

You'll always know the likely cost before work starts, what's been found and why, and roughly how long the full repair will take — no vague estimates, no work started without your sign-off.

Process FAQ

Does every job go through all four stages?

Not necessarily — a simple job might combine assessment and repair into one visit. Major damage almost always needs a make-safe visit first, followed by a scheduled repair.

What if the damage turns out to be worse than expected once you start?

We'll stop, explain what we've found, and agree revised costs and scope with you before continuing — you're never billed for work you haven't approved.

Can I use your assessment for an insurance claim?

Yes, our on-site notes and photos can support your claim, though your insurer may also send their own assessor.
